What do I put them in??????

When you receive flowers after you admire them, think how wonderful the person is who gave them to you is you have the "ahhhh" what am I going to put them in moment......

The definition of a vase is a decorative container without handles, typically made of glass or china and used as an ornament or for displaying cut flowers.

So although we may know what it traditionally means it doesn't mean you are limited to a glass or china container.

Vases come in a variety of different shapes but can also be made from every day items.

Flowers require water and if the container can hold water or another can be placed in the container you want to use, then use it!

A container could be anything from a traditional column style glass vase, ceramic pot, mug, cup, bottle, stone urn, basket, bucket or tin.

For those outer containers which won't hold water place your flowers in a plastic container (maybe use last nights takeout - washed of course) and place your freshly cut flower stems in clean water and then place the whole lot in your outer container for instance a basket or wooden box.

Used jam jars and pasta bottles make great containers for little posies. Re use your candle jar once you have burnt the candle they are a great size! An old plant pot, decorative cardboard box or hamper basket can be used to create a pretty display. Tin cans work and so do buckets - we florists use versions of these all the time.

Cut down soft drink bottles also make great containers to place flowers in or to be used inside another container. Wine bottles can make a unique display with their different coloured glass and 1 or 2 stems of longer flowers placed in a grouping or a collection of spice bottles creates a different look.

If you don't have a nice enough outer container (or one which works with your flowers), think about using the paper the flowers come in wrapped around your plastic container - the paper we use is a complementary colour or matches your flowers so can continue to work tied around your container.
